I’m not really an environmentalist

Tiny FrogToday I was considering an answer to the question “why are you such an ardent environmentalist?’

I surprised myself by answering, ” I’m not really an environmentalist ”

No, what I really primarily care about is the future of my children and on more general level the future prospects for the human race, so my environmentalist concerns are just my way of ensuring our children have a future.

I care about the whales and the dolphins, the tall karri forests in the southwest and the great barrier reef because our common survival depends on the basic principle that we act as one. If they don’t survive then the prospect that we will survive is diminished. We are all living creatures on the same little planet.

Scientists are studying frogs a lot these days, not because they are cute and cuddly but because they are an good indictor of the cleanliness of our waterways. We might not miss the frogs if they all die out, but we will rue the fact that we allowed them to become extinct because we will then be next to go.

No I’m not really an environmentalist, just a pragmatist.
